These aren't defects that show up in reviews; they're the gap between how a short behaves on a hanger and how it behaves under actual movement.
A flat, wide waistband — typically two to three inches — holds position during lateral movement in a way that a narrow, single-layer band simply does not. The narrow ones look cleaner and they feel fine when you're standing still, but once you're sprinting, cycling, or doing anything that involves hip flexion under load, they roll inward and bunch. You end up stopping to fix them, which is exactly when you realize you bought the wrong pair.
Drawstrings matter too, but not in the way you'd expect. An internal drawstring without a cord lock will loosen over a long run and eventually just hang out of the fly. The cord lock — a small plastic toggle — costs manufacturers almost nothing to include, but a surprising number of mid-price shorts skip it. After a few months of washing, the drawstring itself can also shrink relative to the casing, which means you're fighting it every time you try to adjust.
A 5-inch inseam is fine for the gym floor. It's not fine for a 10-mile trail run, where thigh chafe sets in somewhere around mile four and doesn't stop. The 7-inch inseam feels modest in the mirror and is genuinely the most functional length for running and most outdoor cardio — it keeps the leg fabric from riding up but doesn't restrict stride. The 9-inch is increasingly popular for lifting and cycling because it eliminates inner-thigh contact entirely, but it can feel restrictive during high-knee movements if the fabric has low stretch recovery.
Stretch recovery is the spec that rarely appears on product pages but matters more than the percentage of spandex listed. A short can be 15% elastane and still have poor recovery if the knit structure is too loose. After six months of washing, those shorts go baggy at the hem and sag in the seat — you'll recognize them because the fabric looks pilled but feels floppy. A tighter, denser knit with 8-10% elastane will often outlast a cheaper construction with twice the stretch content.
A built-in liner extends the life of the short only if it's actually attached well. The failure point is almost always the liner's leg band — a thin elastic loop that's stitched to the outer shell at one or two points. That attachment frays. It starts pulling away from the interior seam after repeated washing, and eventually the liner bunches or rides up completely. If you're examining a short before buying, turn it inside out and look at how the liner connects. A liner stitched along its entire perimeter to the shell is more durable than one that's only anchored at two seam points.
Some people — particularly those doing high-volume running — skip lined shorts entirely and wear compression shorts underneath. That combination gives you better support, independent washing, and no liner failure. The tradeoff is obvious: it's two garments, it's hotter, and it costs more over time. But if you've gone through three pairs of lined shorts in two years because the liner gave out before the shell did, it's worth considering.
Most active shorts advertise "secure zip pocket" as a feature. The pocket itself is usually fine; the zipper pull is not. The small, flat zipper pulls used on running shorts are nearly impossible to operate with sweaty hands, and the ones made of thin nylon braid fray at the base within a few months of regular use. A slightly larger pull — even a small loop of cord — makes a real difference. If you're buying for running and you carry a key and a card, check whether the zip pocket sits flat against the hip or angles forward. A forward-angled pocket digs into your hip flexor on the upswing.
Side pockets without zippers are fine for your phone at the gym. They are not fine for trail running, cycling, or anything where the phone can shift and swing. That movement adds up and the seam at the pocket opening is where you'll eventually see a small tear.
There is no active short that handles running, lifting, and cycling equally well. The proportions that make a short good for running — shorter inseam, lighter fabric, minimal structure — make it mediocre for heavy squats, where you want more length and a denser fabric that doesn't pull or expose when you're in the hole. If you're buying one pair to do everything, you're compromising on at least one use case. Buying two purpose-specific pairs is more expensive upfront and genuinely the better outcome.
