That friction point — the inner thigh — is where fabric quality reveals itself faster than anywhere else. A nylon-spandex blend with a tight weave will outlast a looser polyester knit by a year or more in that zone. The percentage matters less than the construction: look for a fabric weight around 200–230 gsm for leggings meant to hold their shape through squats and sprints. Lighter than that and you're likely buying something that photographs well but bags at the knees after six months of use.
Activewear companies use "compression" loosely. A tight feel at the store is not the same as functional graduated compression, which typically runs 15–20 mmHg for light support and 20–30 mmHg for recovery wear. Most standard gym leggings sit below 15 mmHg — they hold you in, but they're not doing circulatory work. That's fine for yoga or lifting. If you're running long distances or standing on your feet for eight-hour shifts and want the legging to reduce leg fatigue, look for a garment that actually states its compression rating in mmHg rather than just calling itself "supportive."
The distinction matters because high compression garments fit differently. A size medium in a true 20–30 mmHg compression tight will feel noticeably harder to pull on than a size medium in a standard performance legging. First-time buyers often return the compression option thinking it's too small. It's probably not — it's just doing what it's supposed to do.
Flat-lock stitching is a baseline expectation at this point, but the placement of those seams varies significantly. A center-back seam running vertically down the seat looks clean in photos and causes chafing on runners within twenty minutes. Side-seam construction, or better still a seamless knit through the seat and inner thigh, is what survives real use.
The waistband is the other place to look before you buy. A wide, high-rise band with a second internal layer will stay put through a HIIT class; a single-layer waistband with a raw edge will roll down by your third set of burpees. If there's a drawstring, pull it before you buy — it should feed through a casing, not sit exposed on top of the fabric, where it will knot up in the wash and eventually rip free from the stitching.
A sports bra that fits well is doing a lot of structural work. The band carries roughly 80 percent of the support load, which means if your band rides up in the back, the bra is too big — not the straps too short. That's the single most common reason sports bras come back: the buyer sized up for comfort and ended up with a band that migrates north during any movement faster than walking.
Encapsulation bras (individual cups) outperform compression bras for cup sizes D and above during high-impact activity. Below a C cup, a compression style is often enough for running and cycling, and tends to be more comfortable for all-day wear. Underwire in activewear is a personal call, but if you choose it, make sure the wire casing is double-stitched — the single-layer casing is the defect that shows up most often in returns, usually after the first wash when the wire begins to work through.
Recycled polyester is everywhere in activewear right now, and it's a reasonable material, but it holds odor differently than virgin polyester or nylon. The fibres trap bacteria more readily, which means a recycled-poly legging worn to a hot yoga class needs to go into the wash the same day — left overnight in a gym bag, the smell sets in a way that doesn't fully come out. That's not a dealbreaker, just a use-case reality that marketing materials skip over. If you run warm, sweat heavily, or travel frequently and can't always do laundry quickly, a nylon-dominant fabric will give you more flexibility.
Active tops — whether cropped tanks, long-sleeve layers, or zip-front jackets — share the same quality signals as bottoms. Look at the hem stitching on a racerback tank: a clean coverstitch holds flat against the skin; a single-needle hem will roll after five washes. Mesh panels add ventilation but reduce durability in exactly the spots where a bag strap or a seatbelt sits. If you're buying a training jacket, a bonded seam construction (no exposed stitching on the inside) is worth paying for if you plan to wear it over bare skin — the raw-edge alternative works fine over a base layer but abrades quickly against your arms during rowing or paddling movements.
